The Infernal Breed Characteristic is now available to unlock! (Under the Manage My Breeds page.)

This BC is currently for medium-boned horses only however that will be changing very soon as the plan is to allow this to be used on any bone size. I just have not had a chance to implement that yet. It's been a hard week around here and we are exhausted. Expect it to be for all sizes next week.

Something important to know. This is our first fantasy BC. If you add this to your horses they will have all the same fantasy restrictions as fantasy genes.

The infernal also comes automatically equipped with the Halloween: Infernal Inferno background by default. Like other BCs, you can change this background if you want. You can also find this background in the "This is Halloween" tack pack if you would like to access this background without using the BC.

The infernal won't be available forever. How long? Until I get around to making the programming logic to make limited-edition BCs. You will have at least until the end of October. Past that, I make no promises.

**Please note that Infernal BC horses have an extreme position warp and WILL result in odd stray markings on older texture maps. Please fully regenerate (not refresh!) if you see odd markings.**

The infernal BC works amazing with the thunderstruck gene making a phantasmal glow. Because it compliments this so well I have added Thunderstruck to the sales list for both the RGS AND the GMT lab for the rest of the month.

Game news
In some other game news, I have been doing a bunch of updates on horse generation getting things running more seamlessly with the new BCs. There is a lot of ground to cover so it is taking a while but I am making progress.

Haystack is still working on the new Payment system. He has gotten tons done on it but we are having to build EVERYTHING from scratch. It's a blessing because it will work so much more seamlessly and be a much nicer experience for you but it is tedious as all get out.

The next BC jenx and I are going to work on is the Akhal Teke. Traditional Cob was next on the list but frankly, I am not inspired by any of the cob references we have, and I don't want to do this one until we can do it right. I have better AT shots so they are moving up in the order.

BC Updates
-I will be working on getting the PRE ready to go next week. And Jenx is starting work on the Halloween horse art.
-Thank you for sharing feedback with us about what you want for the Akhal Teke. We settled on a look that was more true to the sport horse type favored in the home country of the breed while still retaining some strong traits that make the breed stand out. It was very clear from the feedback that our community is very split on what style of Akhal Teke they want so hopefully a middle-ground appearance will be serviceable for most players.
-I will not be requesting image references for an adult Akhal Teke as I am actually already all set. I might ask for help with the foal but I am not sure yet.

Other News
-Haystack has been plinking away steadily at payment system updates so he is making progress even if I was under the weather.
-My inbox is kind of a wild mess at the moment. I am doing a few fixes for members and will hopefully start breeding lab updates stuff soon but I also have quite a log jam that has built up and it is being a beast to untangle. I am not exactly sure what will be getting done in what order.

OCT 11th DOWNTIME!
On October 11th our server company is going to be physically unplugging our server, taking it out of its rack, and moving it to a new location. When that happens we will go dark for about 30 minutes, but it could be as much as a few hours. This could happen at literally any time on the 11th. Who works on what normally?
First for some context here is what each of us do on the game.
-I do all the member-facing interactions, advertising, interface coding, and database updates, and am the executive officer. I make sure everyone's workload is doled out, help with planning all our updates, and make sure member feedback is listened to and figure out how to use it to improve the game. I tend to take care of the constant stream of small issues that need taken care of.
-Haystack does the business paperwork, is a sysadmin who makes sure our servers are running correctly, and does the deep project work. That means most large long-term projects are handled by Haystack,
- Jenx is our full-time artist. He is making new breed art and is slowly overhauling all of our tack assets in the back. He also makes art for special events.

Who's working on what right now?
-I have some bugs with BCs I am working on and am in the early stages of building the new breeding lab. (Small fires keep popping up that I have to deal with.) I am also doing a fair number of invisible to-members updates to improve admin functions in the game.
-Haystack is building the updated shopping cart system, and making it so we can take far more payment options.
-Jenx has finished up the PRE art (I think it's his best one yet!) and will be starting the special Halloween horse next.

Work shut down this week
As much as we want to keep working on these next projects we are having to take some time off this week. We are moving to Europe next spring and have a bunch of fixes around the house that must be done before then. Also, we are having electrical work done on the entire upstairs of the house this week which is going to cause significant work disruptions anyway so we are trying to fit it all into this week.

What's the ETA?

New shopping cart check out: From the sounds of it Haystack doesn't have too many work days left on this. The work delay means this will get pushed back a bit though. Early October probably for this one.

Subscription Price Changes: Don't forget our sub prices are going up! Also early October for this one. (got a bit delayed with urgent house maintenance)

New breeding lab: A bit early to tell on this one. Haystack and I need to do some server updates to get this working and it's a very new type of project for me. I would guess we have about a month on this, but I like to put updates out in parts, a few updates have even gone out already, so you should hopefully start seeing bits sooner rather than later. Expect this in October.

Image Gen Updates: I have been keeping a list of all the little image gen oddities I need to fix for the new BCs (and boy is it getting long) I will probably work on these and breeding lab updates around the same time period. Those bad white leg markings are my highest priority. Expect the fixes to start coming soon but they will be doled out a few at a time between other work. It's a two-person job to get these out which has slowed down the work on it.

Breed Characteristics: The art for PREs is done, though the finalization still needs doing. We expect this to be out right at the beginning of October with the Halloween special horse coming out later in the month. Work on the Irish Cob will also be starting next month. After that, I will sit down and plan with Jenx what else we want to try and get done for the rest of the year.

Tack Editor Updates: We want rotating of tack items for you, and a proper layering system and we want it bad. Also getting rid of the old editor system which only causes problems. Haystack will be back at this project as soon as shopping cart updates are done. I have no good ETA for you on this because we need to do some major planning on it first. I am hoping to see lots of nice updates to this over the winter.

Advertising We stopped advertising for a bit there to help us ride out the economic downturn. We are starting to wind it up again. Right now we are directing new traffic towards Forest server. So if you see an uptick there that is why.

-Be good examples of the breed type.
-Show as much of the horse as possible, tall grass hides a lot of leg details.
-Bonus if we can clearly see at least some of each leg.
-Limited, or ideally no tack at all.

-In addition to the nice square on body shots if you have an image of a body part (like a head, mane, tail etc.) that you think is particularly nice feel free to share it, including the reason you are sharing, but we need square full body shots more than anything. The body part in question should be clearly labeled and must STILL be square to the camera. We can't use the images otherwise.

We need adult horses AND foal images.

Please don't share images of "pretty horses" that do not fit what is outlined above. It bogs things down and makes it harder on us.

We ALSO need a discussion about the name of this breed.

"Gypsy Vanner" is a US-specific term for cobs bred in the UK by the Travelers/Gypsy/Romani people. It is very important to note that "Gypsy" is considered a very offensive racist term any many parts of the world, but nomadic people are not a monolith and different cultures of nomadic people call themselves different things. The ones I have met in the US call themselves Romani. In Bulgaria, the posters for their festivals use the word Romanai in English but they mostly go by Tsiganin in Bulgarian. As I understand in the UK Gypsy is often the preferred word. The Traveler people have their own cultural identity and heritage that is completely unique from the Roma people, and they are not interchangeable groups despite sharing horse genetics.

I am not here to shame anyone for saying "gypsy" but we are also not going to use that word in the game out of respect for my personal friends in the US and Bulgaria who are Romani.

Up to now, I have been using the word Vanner as it is easily identifiable what breed I am speaking about. I am however very open to calling them something else. A few notes. I dropped the Lusitano. There is clear and steady preference for the Andalusian from the membership and they are close enough in appearance that it does not make sense to add both at this time. I also labeled each breed with what bone weight they would fall into. Also, this is planning for the rest of 2023, so don't expect these to all show up in a hurry.

-Bright, clear lighting, without overly dark shadows
-Be side-on shots with the photo taken square to the shoulder, like the current images in the game.
-Be good examples of the breed type.
-Show as much of the horse as possible, tall grass hides a lot of leg details.
-Bonus if we can clearly see at least some of each leg.
-Limited, or ideally no tack at all.

-In addition to the nice square on body shots if you have an image of a body part (like a head, mane, tail etc.) that you think is particularly nice feel free to share it, including the reason you are sharing, but we need square full body shots more than anything. The body part in question should be clearly labeled and must STILL be square to the camera. We can't use the images otherwise.

We need adult horses AND foal images.

Please don't share images of "pretty horses" that do not fit what is outlined above. It bogs things down and makes it harder on us. ]]>
