I am considering changing it on Random Acts of Giving so that it tells you who sent you what. We got a lot of feedback from recipients that they found it being all anonymous made it difficult to keep track of what was going on, difficult to give proper thanks, etc.

I considered having being anonymous be optional but I decided it really needs to be all or nothing because I feel having it be an option would put strange pressures and precedents on people and make things stressful.

I am interested in your feelings on this.

What about just a list of anyone who sent you anything at the end of the exchange with no info on who sent what?

They are not final art. The muscle lines are just there as reference notes and will be changing.

ETA: full drama mane would be a tack item, this more normal mane would be for the default.

Introducing Stallion Futurities!

This June for the seventeenth anniversary of HAJ we will be hosting our very first stallion futurity.

HAJ tends towards walled gardens. Often people don't do a lot of sharing of lines. There is nothing wrong with this inherently but it is always nice to see flashy stallion ads and the culture that immerges around particularly well-promoted stallions. To help encourage members to promote and share their stallions I have created this brand-new LB category.

Here are the rules:
To qualify for the futurity a stallion must have at least 10 offspring bred and owned by players other than the owner of the stallion.
Those offspring must be the same era as the stallion, and must be five years of age.
The total number of points won by the top ten offspring of each qualified stallion count towards his futurity standings.
The number shown next to the stallion name is the sum of the points earned this year by his top 10 offspring.
Stallions do not need to be entered in era clubs to qualify for the futurity.

Note that stallions and their offspring do not need to be in the era clubs which means futurities are open to fantasy horses.

Because of how the futurities work you promote your stallion several months in advance. In this first case, you would promote in February in hopes that the five-year-olds in June rack up the most points for your era.

Prizes for futurities are significant:
Champion: 10 GMTs to the stallion owner, and 1 GMT to the owner of each of his 10 best foals.
Reserve Champion: 8 GMTs, and 1 GMT to the owner of each of his 10 best foals
Third Place: 8 GMTs
Fourth Place: 6 GMTs
Fifth Place: 4 GMTs
Ribbons to 10th place.

The first set of futurity awards go out June 28th. Then every month thereafter.

_____

An important note. If you know you are the kind of person who is going to want to obsessively quality-check the descendants of your stud, and get flustered if the lines are not to your standards please do not stand your stallions to the public. It just stresses out everyone involved. It is not fair to yourself, the people who use your stud, or me who has to deal with the fallout. Know yourself and know what you are signing up for if you stand your stallion. Stallion rules are not permitted for any stud listed on the public boards or the forums. Lower-quality offspring of a stallion does not negatively impact him on the leaderboard, or for the futurities. Just be chill with it, or know that if you can't you will be happier keeping to your own garden.

A lowest PT LB category is also coming soon if you wish to start up a low PT project in earnest now that is no longer financially punished.

Reminder: please do not post stallion ads before the 28th

What makes a good reference photo? Images should have:

-Bright, clear lighting, without overly dark shadows
-Be side-on shots with the photo taken square to the shoulder, like the current images in the game.
-Be good examples of the breed type.
-Show as much of the horse as possible, tall grass hides a lot of leg details.
-Bonus if we can clearly see at least some of each leg.
-Limited, or ideally no tack at all.

-In addition to the nice square on body shots if you have an image of a body part (like a head, mane, tail etc) that you think is particularly nice feel free to share it but we need square full body shots more than anything.

We need adult horses AND foal images (around age 6 months, not newborns).

We are on a continuing mission to give you even greater control over your horse images. We are excited to share our alpha release of pseudo-depth.

Before:

After:

What is pseudo-depth?
Our images are flat and have no real third dimension to them but you can now "push" your horse back into the image by dragging it vertically on the canvas creating a false sense of depth. It's not real depth because you must still manually update the layering order of items

Why an alpha?
Going to be frank here, this release was a huge amount of work. We are massively over our time budget on this project and we know it still has a ways to go before it is fully releasable. That is why it currently works if you open up the advanced tack editor and play with it, but it will not work for any refreshes of the image.

If you refresh the image the horse will go back to its default size, but if you open the advanced tack editor again it will show the scaled version.

What we need from you?
Tell us what you like, what is not working, what could be improved etc. Feedback will help us get this dialed in and working smoothly.

Issues we know about.
We are aware of and currently working on addressing the horse jumping horizontally when you click on it, and some strangeness with deleting/duplicating/removing of items sometimes happening in an off fashion.

Oh also tack items now "stick" to the horse and move and scale when you move the horse around. Find an item that is behaving like tack and should not be (or the other way around) please let us know so we can adjust it.

Very minor update to Chinchilla. For some palomino chinchilla horses, some yellow was bleeding into the color. This was fixed and all ee chinchillas are now properly pure white again.

__

Tobiano has been aggressively optimized and is now effectively instant to generate. There are some side effects to this that you should know of:

Appearance Changes
-Tobiano markings have changed. If you regen your tobiano horses you will get new markings. This was an unavailable part of speeding it up. It should not be a dramatic change in appearance though. You can opt to not regenerate, and your old markings should stay, though I can't guarantee they will be unchanged forever.

-Please note! There is a good deal of variation at each white factor level. If you don't like that your horse gained or lost white/colored areas, please don't post complaints about it. Just get a new seed. You will be able to get an equivalent white-to-color ratio again. The range you can get for each WF level has not changed but the specific expression for each seed has.

-This overhaul changed when jewelbox happens in the generation process. This was an unintentional change to how the gene appears. I apologize for that. That said I strongly feel this is a big upgrade and really improves the look of the gene making it more realistic and more merle-like. The new generation keeps the same lacey edges while preserving more of the base color in the large solid areas.

Here is old jewelbox generation:

and new generation:

New Functionality:
-I noticed that our dynamic tobiano markings could not make the pseudo-solid-looking tobianos (the ones you can't tell are tobi by looking). I have added this functionality in. It is pretty rare but it is possible to get solids or very near solids now. Your very low white factor horses may generate with less white on the legs. You can purchase a new seed and get more leg white without touching the white factor.

A pseudo solid tobiano. They can have even less white than this.

-Tobiano mapping is now fully implemented and looking amazing. Mapping is roan edges around tobiano markings. Mapping can appear on any tobi at random but is much more common on horses with other kit mutations AND those with Kit Promoter. This includes horses with a single otherwise inactive copy of KP.

Without mapping:

With mapping:

____

If you see any odd behavior please report it here, or just want to share your cool new generation or feedback? I look forward to your post. :x

A few weeks ago I added the ability for you to create new breeds and to create horses with those breeds. Now you can update the breeds of horses you already own.

Some rules you should know about:
-You can change the breed of any horse you have created or bred.
-You can change the breed of any horse you have purchased if it is a National bred horse.
-No one can erase your breed off your horses if you sell them.
-Horses with the University breed have it for a good reason. You can not change the University breed.
-You must have finished setting up your breed to use it. (Must have a name and bone weight if not your primary breed)
-You can not change the breed of a horse with offspring, HOWEVER for the month of April and May this is waived. This rule does not apply until June 1st.
-If you have a default tattoo set for the breed, it will be applied when you change the breed and you will be charged 25hbs. It will not add the tattoo more than once.

There are two ways to change your horse's breed. You can do so via the control panel on their page, or you can do a bulk edit from the barn page.

This is a chunky update and one I think will be very exciting for everyone, even those without premium upgrades!

First what changes are for everyone?
You will now notice that the create a horse page no longer has toggles for height and weight. There is now a drop-down telling you what breeds you can create instead. If you don't have an upgrade or never set up your breed name, it will say "National Riding Horse, National Sport Pony, etc." If you have set up your default breed you will instead see "Mybreedname Riding Horse, Mybreedname Sport Pony, etc."

I am uncertain if this setup is going to cause misclicks but it is how I am able to get this working at the moment. If it becomes an issue I will update how the form works.

Also, regardless of your upgrade level, if you breed together two horses of the same breed (other than the default National breed) the foal will be born that breed AND be automatically assigned that breed's tattoo at birth.

Breeding will now tell you what breed your foal is at birth.

What has changed for basic upgrade users?
Instead of "National" you will now see your breed name on the create a horse page. You can set a default tattoo for your breed and all your new creates and foals born of that breed will automatically gain that tattoo.

What has changed for premium upgrade users?
If you have a premium upgrade head to Member Home >> Account and Stable Management >> Manage Stable Settings. From this page, you can found new breeds, and set the name, rules and tattoo for that breed. Please note that you must set up a name and a bone weight rule before you can use this breed in game. It cost 10 IVs to found a new breed. The initial name setup is free, and the price is 1 IV per name change after that.

With these new breeds, you can give each of your lines a unique breed name to help keep them organized and automatically assign tattoos at birth. If other players breed a stallion and mare from these lines together the foal will automatically take that breed name and tattoo, even if the foal is many generations away from your founding stock. **Note that only "purebreds" can be born into breeds not owned by the breed**

Why is the bone weight rule but height is optional mandatory?
You have to set a bone weight rule because of upcoming changes we have planned that will require all horses of the same breed to use the same art assets. Ponies and cobs in the game use the same art assets as their larger counterparts so that rule is optional. If you breed a foal that does not meet the rules you set up for your founded breed it will be born as part of your default breed.

What about my existing lines?
Right now founded breeds are limited to new creates. That is because I want to get in some testing on low-stakes horses before I let you lose to mess about with your more precious lines. You will be able to change the breed of your existing horses next month. (ETA before Easter weekend.) You will only ever be able to change the breed of horses you have personally bred or created, and for a limited time you will be able to set the breed of older horses though in the future this will be age limited.

Other coming features:
I recognize the need to be able to search by breed now, and a way you can get info about a breed's setting if you are not the founder. These things are coming next month.

Breed inheritance rules
Here is the full rundown of breed inheritance rules. Premium users can see this when they found a breed but I wanted to have the full info available for all.

Things to know about breeds:

It costs 10 IVs to found a new breed. New breeds will be created with the breed name "National".

After creating the breed you will be able to set the name, weight rules, optional height rules, and default tattoo for this breed.

Each breed only works for light-boned, medium-boned, or heavy-boned horses.

Once your new breed is founded you will be able to register the breed of foals bred by you, and create new foundations of that breed.

Only horses bred or created by you can be set to your breed.

Breed names are not removed in the event that you no longer have a premium upgrade, but will become uneditable until your upgrade is renewed.

Breeds named "National" are never inherited.

Foals inherit the breed of their parents under the following rules:

Foals must be the correct bone (light, medium, heavy) for the foal to inherit the breed name.

If a height rule is set, foals must be the correct height to inherit the breed name.

If the sire and the dam are the same breed, and the foal follows the bone weight and height rules, the foal is born that breed, even if you are not the founder of that breed.

Foals born to breeds you are not the founder of will still have the default tattoo of that breed.

When cross-breeding, the foal is always born to a breed you are the founder of.

When cross-breeding, the sire's breed always takes precedence. If you are the founder of the sire's breed, and the foal meets the rules for that breed, the foal will be born the same breed as the sire.

Foals will be born the same breed as their dam during cross-breeding, if you are the founder of the dam's breed but not the sire's breed, and the foal meets the rules for that breed.

Any foals bred by you, that cannot inherit the breed of their sire or dam, will be born under your default breed name.

In the game, we have always had people who want to mess about with bucking the trends and trying to go for low rather than high ability. It is actually the more significant challenge to breeding for low ability as you have fewer tools to guide you, but through a combination of AFPT and comparison testing, you can produce perfectly horrid horses.

Backwards Breeders rewards the worst-producing stallion and mares in the game. Stallions must have 5 or more living foals, and mares must have 2 or more living foals. There are no club restrictions or age restrictions on the offspring. It also rewards the lowest PT scores produced each year.

As the clubs are brand new they will send out their first set of awards in March.
