Reminder about agouti and pasture updates!

Don't forget that we will be making changes to the agouti gene in the coming months. See the announcements section of the forum for full details. At the end of June pastures will most likely be set to their final 2x size foal cap per pasture. We will do some final analytics just to be sure before we make that change but that is when I am currently expecting it to happen. The pasture cap will then be staying at 2x permanently.

As a final note, Haystack, Flufflepuff, Jenx and myself are all visiting family and friends in Bulgaria for June and July. (Hurrah lifting travel restrictions!) You should not see too much disruption as we are setting up a remote HAJ HQ here but it does mean I will be in a very different time zone. If customer service response times seem a bit funny, that is the reason.

How does gray work now?
Gray foals are now born with hyperpigmentation and gray googles. Horses progressively dapple and gray out as they age with hom. gray horses aging a bit faster than het. gray horses.

Why are all the dapples the same? What about fleabites and blood marks?
I only had enough time to get gray generation to this point. Gray is a HUGE process, and like when we did appy generation I am going to have to put updates for it out in waves as I have time to work on it. Right now the dapples are static and the same for every horse, fleabites and blood marks are also not working yet. I wanted to get something presentable out now, it is already way better than what we had, but it is still a long way off from what I would like to see it end up as. I would love to see gray finished before the end of 2022.

What is the "every horse" tweak?
Saturation has been slightly bumped to help balance out the recent yellow bump we had. I feel this makes the horse images more engaging and pleasing to look at. It also helps make pangare and other lightning markings more effective looking. I did my best to test this but, sometimes, until you put it out in the wild it can be hard to get a good feel for a low-level system-wide change.

Reroll currently required.
Both the new gray update and the bumped saturation require a full reroll, not just an image refresh to show. There is no way to make these changes show up without fully regenerating a horse's texture map. If you just refresh grays right now you will see a change but it will be a hybrid between the old images and the new ones. I am open to suggestions on the issue of how or if we should force update to the new gray system. Happy to hear what people think is the best way to go about it. (We will not be force updating every horse in the game. That is totally unnecessary.)

Finally, if you have feedback either on the gray update or the saturation update let me know! I am very open to what you all have to say on the issue.

Important note that gray does NOT work in the advanced tack editor yet. I will be adding that when I do the next round of updates on it.

29 users in the game created more foals (in purchased pastures) than they had purchased pasture slots for ranging from 2 to 1400 foals in excess. (9 users bred over two times the number of slots but most only in single digits. ) Of these only 7 users have 100 foals in excess and only 3 have 500 foals in excess of slots.

The three users with 800 to 1400 foals in excess also maxed out or nearly maxed out their primary pastures. Of those three two are using foal churning with one having made 15.6 million in the auction this month and the other having made 9.2 million in the auction this month.



Conclusions

Overall it seems like this change is not massively impacting users BUT at 3x cap, we are still seeing some users using breed and dump tactics for huge profits. Importantly I am not seeing any trends that specific upgrade levels are more likely to max out the resources so there is no need to do any adjustments based on level but I do think we probably need to lower the cap to 2x the pasture size because of some exploitive behavior by some users. (Again to be clear they are not in any kind of trouble the game allows this. It is something I need to account for balancing reasons is all).

I am going to leave the pasture cap at 3x for the May breeding season. It probably will be dropped to 2x the size of the pasture for June breeding season just to kick the legs out from the foal churning breeding but give some more time for those breeding over 2x time to adjust. I do not see any reason to lower the cap any more than that. These numbers look really solid.

The old naming also regularly confused people so hopefully, this panel clears things up.


Refreshing an image will update tack, candy and fishtails, aging functions, and everything else aside from the horse's actual coat and markings.

Regenerate an image when you want to completely rebuild your horse's image. Use this if new genes are not appearing or you wish to update your horse to new texture generation.

Getting a new seed will completely regenerate your horse's image and reroll all the random numbers. They will get new markings and coat appearance.

Here is what you need to know:
An exploit in the game allowed users to create unlimited foundation mares, breed them in pastures and then auction both the mares and foals back to the game 3 times a week to produce a large amount of HBs. This was not just hard on the server but also damaging to the game's economy. To close this exploit pastures have been capped in the number of foals you can breed in them each season. A pasture can produce 3 times the number of foals as its size. (30 foals per 10-acre pasture, 300 per 100-acre pasture etc. ) Pastures have always been intended to be used once per season (hence the 30-day boost) so this is just bringing that more in line with how they are supposed to be used.

Not sure how to make your breeding work now? Ask if you need some help figuring this change out.

There were a bunch of issues with images being tagged as needing full from scratch image creation when they already had an image. This has been fixed and should mean way faster refresh times on your imaged. If an image is stuck and not showing an update you may need to reroll it.

Foals born in pastures will now automatically have their images generated in the background. Depending on your upgrade level and how busy the server is this can take a few minutes or a few hours. All pasture foals go into a giant line to get their images. Foals owned by premium accounts go to the front of the line, foals owned by basic accounts go next, and then free accounts. (Don't want to wait? You can always open your foal's page and have the image generated right away. This is only for background generation.) Higher-level upgrades get to cut in front of lower levels as a perk of supporting the game, but everyone will get their images eventually.

I did notice an issue yesterday with some barns producing thousands of foals in a single day and holding up the queue for hours. A new change was implemented this morning where if you have over 500 in the automatic image generation queue all new foals you produce will have to wait at the back of the line. They will still get images but they have to wait for all the smaller barns to get theirs first.
-Specifically how this works is you will be given a warning under your "Breed This Pasture" button, informing you that you have over 500 foals in the queue. You can choose to wait or breed the pasture anyways (100% ok to do). If you breed the pasture anyways all foals in that specific pasture will get flagged for delayed generation. Basically, those foals let everyone else cut in line in front of them. That way you can breed all the foals you want at one time without negatively impacting anyone else.

If you want to see the current status of the automatic image generation queue you can go to the "Who is Online Link." It is located in your user profile information drop-down next to the chat and PM icons in the top left. This will tell you not only how many foals the game is working on right now but how many you have to go.

Final note, I have been doing work on gray this week (because a chrome update broke the tack editor and I had to wait for SysAdmin Haystack to be home to fix the issue). Expect some gray news soon!

Second, this past month we implemented horse images generating in the background without anyone opening their page. While this is awesome functionality our internet hosting bill is climbing rapidly as a result. Yes, it costs us pennies to generate a horse image but with Bluegrass having some 100k foals this year and Forest around 75k you can see how fast those costs skyrocket. The generator was running as fast as we could afford to run it and we still have foals with no images yet. There are simply too many foals made each year. We are going to have to start gating things a bit.

The first change has already happened. Now only premium accounts will have images generated in the background. Basic and free accounts will need to open the page to generate an image like before. Just open, remember you do not need to wait around for an image to load. Basic and free accounts tend to be much smaller anyways. Premium accounts breed about 50% of foals each year.

The next change is something people are not going to be happy about. We understand this, we empathize but we also are running a business and have to cover our costs. Pastures are going to be going up in price by about 25% over the next several months. Pastures, hands down, cost us the most amount of money of anything in the game. They generate a lot of downstream hosting and generation costs. Hand breeding and creating can only be done so fast but pasture breeding can be done at insane rates. Limiting pastures helps us keep server costs reasonable.

We won't be making this change all in one go. Prices will go up in 5 or 10% increments over the next few months. We want to be 100% honest with you that this is happening and what it is happening. We know upping the price on pastures will mean we sell less of them and that is exactly the point. We need to sell less of them to keep those foal numbers a bit more in check. Hopefully, this addresses the issue without us needing to cap the number of times a pasture can be used per year. (We are also considering limiting pastures to be used only 3 times a season and are interested in your feedback)

The random gene sale page now tells you how many rollovers are left until the offer expires.
The random word symbol "@*" now works on both the create a horse page and directly on the horse pages.
Horses for sale in buddy chats will now show the for sale status icon on your stable home page. They will be marked with an additional * to show they are not a normal sale.


Mesa's foundation rescue should now be showing horses properly again. Away to my stud page I fly like a flash
And set all the stud fees for one million CASH!

The moon thru my window reflects off the screen
I’d turn on the light, but that’d just be too mean.
My spouse doesn’t get it and that’s just too bad
To not have those yearlings would just be SO sad!

I see someone else on the forum now, dammit
You KNOW that that someone has got to be Ammit.
More rapid than eagles her fingers they fly
Making all these new features that I now must buy!

Now Stallions! Now Mares! Now Ponies and Drafts!
On Ponpon! On Fluffle! On Morkov and Button!
To the top of the dummy, to the top of the mare
Make fillies or colts, I really don’t care!

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane blow
Straws will be sold left and right, I just know.
The system is starting to run rather slow.

I speak not a word, but go straight to my work
And fill all my stalls, then turn with a jerk
And laying a finger to wipe off a tear
I remember my embryo’s I saved for this year!

Exhausted and dragging, I fight off the urge
To purchase more barns, I cannot just splurge!
But look at those babies, there on my laptop
How can I manage to make myself stop?!

Now finally its dawn and there are no mares left to breed
Some food and some sleep are the things that I need.
But the alarm is now sounding, I must go to work
To make some more money,

We felt twenty alleles was enough and we are moving on to other things for our winter celebrations. But we wanted to give everyone a solid chance at finishing their collections if they missed any. All the prior ice genes are now 50% off until the end of Feb.

All ice genes have been removed from the random gene sale rotations. Once February is over you will only be able to nab ice during the month of December each year. No new ice genes will be created.

In addition by member request, we have added Onyx and Nexus to the RGS page this month, along with Phantom Lace, since it is February after all. ]]>
