Exceptional producers question
  • Hi all,

I'm trying to understand how breeding, breeding ability, pasture bonus and exceptional producers work. Take this horse as an example:

    FE E9 G1 FireTear

    1. She has a very low Performance Test Grade of 4.70, but she is an exceptional producer. Does it mean that if I breed her to a good stallion (let's assume it's some other Foundation horse with Red Papers and 10.4 PT they will produce a top notch foal with high PT (cap of next gen) despite mare having only 4.70 points? Or will it be an average of both parents + some additional value for the next generation? Or some other formula?

    2. Does being an exceptional producer mean that pasture bonus is already applied to a mare or do these bonuses stack? From the description of Exceptional Producers [#52]:
These horses will be exceptionally good parents compared to other foundations. They will have greater than 100% breeding ability.

    Thanks in advance!
  • Does anyone know?
  • For question 1, PT and breeding ability are separate so PT indicates how well they will train/show and breeding ability is linked to the quality of the foals they will produce. In your example, they're not guaranteed to produce a top notch foal - but they might be capable of it. Exceptional producing foundations are red/B papered, I'm not 100% sure if they are guaranteed to be the best possible for that paper level (someone else can hopefully weigh in on that part!) but even if they are the best possible red/B paper that does not guarantee a top notch foal - it just means a top notch foal is possible.

For your second question, the paper level/breeding ability is separate from pasture bonus. For every breeding pair there's a range of possible foal quality and the pasture bonus makes it more likely that you'll get a higher quality foals in that range (higher breeding ability).

  • Thank you, so in order to (potentially) get the best possible foal I would still want to get all the possible bonuses. And even If I take 2 both exceptional producing parents, the maximum possible boost (without use of the breeding boost) is still not achieved until I have the mare on a pasture for 30+ days.
  • It's still possible to get the highest possible quality foal from any given pair without a pasture boost. It's just more likely with a pasture boost. It just changes the odds in your favor. But yes if you want to change the odds in your favor to produce the best possible foal from two exceptional producer parents you would want the mare to have a 30 day pasture bonus.

Breeding via embryo implantation also improves the odds of a higher papered foal, I think it's equivalent to a 15 day pasture bonus so implanting an embryo (from your two exceptional producer parents) into a mare with a 30 day pasture bonus is the maximum pasture bonus you can get (the embryo implantation bonus stacks on the pasture bonus). It's significantly more expensive than just normal pasture breeding though.
