What inspires your horse names?
  • I definitely use randomized names for some creates, and name lined foals after their parents, but I like to name horses after places I've been and things in nature, like birds and flowers, too. What inspires your in-game horse names? I'd love to see your favorites, too!
  • Most times if I don’t use the random name generator, I’m listening to music and will name my horses off of a couple random words from the song - It’s pretty funny no matter what way you go. I know I named a whole generation of foals with synonyms to the word blue. Sometimes I name them off of what their coat pattern looks like (I commonly did this at the beginning when I had all of my show ponies, but I’m pretty consistent using the name generator to save time now).
    :) Hope that helps!

  • I plan to stay smaller scale than what I know a lot of people do on here, so I tend to think about each name.
Each Foundation horse has a 'themed' name, though I quickly learned that I was going to have countless and the themes became pretty random and sometimes a bit vague. Offspring are named based off of the parents' names.

Themes I use... lyrics, places I've been, books, games, myths, weapons, geography...

I don't randomly generate whole names, but I'll sometimes use a random word generator, and then expand on any words I like to make something I enjoy the sound of.

My favorites include my mare Lost in Lozère, as I named her in anticipation of a trip to France. On the trip, I had the most amazing time 'lost' in that area, so it was pretty perfect. Her first colt, Saint Bauzile, is named for a place within that department that holds significance for me.

So, in short, I overthink my names, haha.

  • I use the name randomize, but I sometimes use or incorporate names of real life horses in my horses' names.

  • I name lined foals something to do with their parents or grandparents. I also have a doc with a list of names that I come across and like so if I run out of inspiration, I can pull up the doc and find something. There's a lot of horses in my barns named after characters from movies, tv shows or books or things in nature.

  • Those are great ideas! BrokenWheel, I might have to start writing names down somewhere like you do, too.

I've also used the randomizer before, and then just used it for inspiration.

  • I'm new, so I don't have much experience but I thought my foals names start with the first letter of their mother's names and that I will have a different motto for names each breeding season. This season it's for example spring inspired names.
