Best Breeding Practices
  • I'm familiar with the various ways to breed but I'm curious from a more applied perspective: what are your best breeding practices for getting the most out of pairings, especially on a budget?

Just starting out my breeding operation, I have 60 mares cooking in the pasture, but harvesting straws and then making embryos is racking up costs quickly so for a new player on a budget, what would be a smart way to go about it? (Holding 100k points so around 10k hb daily income)
  • If there is any particular colours you want, and have found some straws to buy. Maybe do a couple of embryos with pasture bonus with them, so just your really special pairings. Otherwise it's just too expensive to do embryos at that level. Just play the numbers game, do your pasture breedings when they have been in there at least 30 days and should still get a few keepers.
At the start it's more useful to get show horses and expand barns etc, so once the daily income is up can have more to play with for breeding
  • Thanks for the reply! So then I would imagine I should keep better PT mares in the Pasture for the mass breeding purposes?
  • If you're newer I'd keep room in your barn to show your pasture mares to help your income. Move them to the barn show them with button or enter manually and then move them back to pasture so you don't lose their pasture bonus. You can also leave higher pointed horses that have a daily payout already in your pasture if you choose to do that rather than moving them back and forth.

In my opinion Mass breeding is the cheapest way to breed. Once you expand your barns you can keep everything you breed as a show horse. Your show herd is what makes you your money.

As far as getting the most out of what you spend on your breeding project embryos are the way to go because you can get multiple foals from the same pairing. However not all parents create equal offspring. It's also expensive to only breed that way if you are a newer or smaller account. If you have a specific breeding project I would utilize embryo breeding for that project and utilize pasture breeding for everything else.
  • @ReneeScarted mares PT shouldn't matter too much, easier to get a very high paper stallion and put him to them all. Can usually pick up a cap **Star stallion quite cheaply off the saleboards
