When to Spay a Mare?
-
Hi there! I am new to the game and am trying to prepare for the June breeding season with everything I've learned so far.
I'm moving my mares into pastures and wanted opinions on which ones I should be spaying instead. I'd estimate that around 40% of my mares are Yellow papered. Should be spaying my Yellow papered mares and only breeding the Reds? Should I look at each Yellow and decide individually? (Keep the special herd helpers, consistent showers, etc) Or maybe just breed them all to have more foals to choose from next month?
I'd love to hear from players that have been doing this for a while! Especially if you have other tips/things you wish you'd known starting out (:
Thanks in advance! -
When I first started out, I only kept red papered mares for breeding unless i really liked the genetics on a yellow papered mares. But you do want to try having a full pasture to maximize your breeding (and therefore creating more show horses).Thanked by 1smagery

To add on to that, if you don't want to pay to paper your horses (which I found expensive as a new player!), typically horses made with "Create a Horse" that are an era below the current one, ex) Era 9 right now as opposed to Era 10, are Exceptional Producers and will be red papered. Definitely check their "somatic tattoos" to see what effects they have, too.
A mare's showing ability doesn't have any effect on the showing ability of her foals (which I didn't understand when I started playing!), only her paper level does, too. This is explained in the FAQ, but I think it's worth reiterating! I spayed several low PT Exceptional Producers before grasping this. Oops!
I also wish I had started by breeding my red papered mares right away to other players' Star**** stallions to get some better showhorse offspring. I instead bred them to my own C and B papered stallions, as well as a Star* stallion that I bought, and that set me back a little, since while they weren't terrible horses, they weren't super star show horses, either.Thanked by 1smagery
