I am not sure how to sell straws to be honest. Can I even do it? I only have the basic upgrade.

You can sell straws with a basic upgrade; just click the breeding tab, collect straws, and then you will get an option to put them up for sale. It costs 500 for each straw, so if you pull 5 for me, I'd pay you 1,000hbs for each, so you can make some money back ;)
