Gene Mod lined horses

I tried to modify a foal I bred. It's dam had the silver gene and I was able to modify it to have the silver gene on the gene it said it had inherited from its dam . The sire didn't have the silver gene and I couldn't modify the gene the foal had inherited from its sire to carry the Silver gene. Does anyone know why?

Barns always open! -
For lined horses, you can only add genes they “missed” meaning the gene the parent had but didn’t pass on. You can’t add a gene that the parent could not have contributed.
