PT vs. Points Question
-
I'm trying to decide which horses to sell, to free up some space. I have horses with high PT values, and I have horses with high points values. They aren't necessarily the same horses.
For geldings and spayed mares - whose value to me is primarily showing - do I keep high PT or high points?
For mares and stallions - whose value includes breeding up the line - again, which factor should carry more weight, PT or points? -
For now, the pointed ones will earn you more hbs short-term. The high PT ones aren't earning you hbs right now and are just taking up space. Keep the ones with points (but don't keep the lower pointed ones) for now. Once you start earning more money and space, you can then keep the high PT ones, and they'll really help you long-term.
For mares and stallions, since you intend on breeding, you should focus on paper, not pt OR points. Your show stock will be what's making you money, so don't worry about the point values of your breeding stock. High PT will not help you advance in breeding, so you should focus on the paper levels, which will actually tell you how good of a breeder that horse is.DarkPhoenix #15470 (she/her) ~ Premium Upgrade

You don't really know how good a show horse they are going to be until they have levelled off, which is usually after 10yo, a bit more for the higher PT horses. If you want to free up space, I'd search for horses over 10yo by points, but before you auction the ones with least points, just see where they are coming in shows. If they are winning their classes then they have the potential to earn you a lot more points. If the higher PT horses level off in a good spot, they can earn you quite good money

Age is everything. Don't cull young high PT horses. You are robbing tomorrow to pay today if you do so.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Thank you all! That certainly helps clarify for me.
The oldest horse I have is only five, so I've got a bit to go yet... -
You could look at it by age brackets. For example take all of your 5 year olds and keep those that are in the top 50% points wise.
For your 2 year olds they haven't had much time to accumulate points, in that case I would keep the top 50% PT wise.Ramshorn Ranch

Right; I'm not considering selling anybody under training and breeding age.
I'm also somewhat confused about the papers - so far I have a lot of C stallions, and three B, and I forget now what I have with mares. But the classifications are confusing - C, Yellow, B, Red, Blue, etc. I have zero way to tell what's high or low.
Edited to add: stallions are mostly C, and three B. Mares are mostly Yellow, and a couple Red.
And I'd think these specifically applied to breeding stock, but I have Yellow papered Spayed Mares and C papered Geldings...which doesn't make sense to me if the papers are what tell you the breeding value... -
Have you read the FAQ User Guide? That has a lot of helpful information that will answer some of these basic questions that you are running into.
https://mesa.horsegeneticsgame.com/faq.php
Every horse will have a paper level whether they have been spayed and gelded or are still a stallion or a mare. All foals are born intact as a stallion or mare, so they all could be used for breeding possibly and they receive a breeding paper level ability when they are born/created. That doesn't go away once you geld/spay them.
Paper Levels from Worst to Best, C is equal to yellow in ability, B is equal to red in ability, etc.:
Showable Only or Failed
C or Yellow
B or Red
A or Blue
*Star or *Gold
**Star or **Gold
***Star or ***Gold
Better paper level breeding stock will produce foals with better paper levels and better PT scores. Foals with better PT scores are more likely to accumulate more points throughout their lifetime and therefore earn you more money in their lifetime.Ramshorn Ranch

Thank you! I thought I had read through the FAQ but obviously I missed that.
