Determining foal quality
-
Since foals don’t have points, what is the best way to determine their quality? Is a high PT the most valuable trait? Does high level papering correlate with a good PT or are these numbers unrelated?
-
I thought I would circle back to my own post and add an answer based off of what I have learned in other threads and from chats/discord/messaging so other players can see an answer if they have the same question.
Foals from foundations (so 2nd generation) should be A or Blue papered, that narrows down what I keep drastically. If the PT score is over 10.4 I'll keep them in my show barns, if they're below that I'll put them in the auction to try to make up for some of the breeding costs.

I am so sorry you didnt get an answer. I have been sick and haven't been on here as much. I see that you found the list that helps out.
Keep in mind too, sometimes you'll have foals just below that PT that you may want to keep. My keeper foals like this go on to do just fine. Let me know if you have any questions. If I cant answer them, I'm sure I can find an answer! -
I typed out an answer for you and forgot to hit post… my apologies.
I see that you’ve found a good bit of information. I’d like to add that not all G2 Horses will be A/Blue papered and it depends on the quality of foundations bred.
If you cross a Pair of Perfect Foundations (C paper Stallion with a Yellow paper mare) it would be expected that the foals would paper red/B. I immediately alter anything that tests C/Yellow from a perfect foundation cross.
If you bred a pair of Exceptional producing foundations (B paper stallion and Red mare) I expect to get Blue/A papered offspring and I alter anything that doesn’t reach that.
I keep all my altered foals to show and I don’t sort them until they reach 10 yo and can be auctioned for a higher value.
I do however have a line of bootstrap horses that have added a ton of value to my show program very quickly and I would highly recommend this to new players. My show bonus was 20k a day in January of 2025… since I’ve added this line and started keeping any altered foals my daily bonus is now 270k!
Bootstrap breeding is where you breed a very high level stallion to low quality mares and the resulting foals are higher quality than those mares could typically produce. I started this with Expro mares and a Star** stallion. I kept any resulting filly’s that could pass basic breeding advice and used them to replace their Dams when they aged up. I keep anything that doesn’t pass BA altered and I alter any colts automatically.
I now have Gold** mares being bred to a star*** stallion.
They are all related. Now this is definitely something I avoid in my main line it doesn’t bother me for this project and they have added amazing value to my show program.
If you have interest in starting a bootstrap line- I would love to give you a high level stallion to help you get started!ID# 1180 -
I’ll also add that with my appy line from Perfect foundations I have recently invested in maxing a foal from each generation and using that foal to compare my others with. If they are not as good as I alter them or max them if I love the genetics.ID# 1180

The Bootstrap breeding makes a lot of sense! I was kinda doing that by searching up high level studs I could afford to breed to. I made two really nice foals that ways. But now I’m waiting for them to grow up haha. I appreciate the detailed answers! I would love to my own Bootstrap line and would appreciate any help! I just started playing this past week.
