Favorite IRL Horse Breeds?
-
So, I'm curious! What are your favorite horse breeds out and about in the world? Any particular reasons?
My two horses are draft crosses, so I love the drafty breeds for their (usually) chill demeaner and size. Mine pretty much have the personalities of giant puppies and love everyone they ever meet.
I also love the Iberian breeds, Andalusians in particular, especially after doing a riding trek in Spain on one.
I would love to know what breeds others adore!

I also have a draft cross but as I’ve gotten older, I really appreciate being closer to the ground. So I prefer my stocky little quarter horse lolThanked by 1etaven

I breed Gypsy Cobs in real life, so yes they are absolutely my favourite breed! I've worked with TBs and Warmbloods a far bit of my life, and when I found the cobs they were just so easy, I love them. Plus they come in so many cool colours haha!Thanked by 1etaven

I am an outlier in the horse community. I love Arabians and anything else "hot". I learned to ride on an Arab as a kid and I am a firm believer they will make you a better horse person because you have to stay on your toes at times. My current mare is a red half Arab with blue eyes. My gelding is a fewspot appy who is like a chill surfer dude. Complete opposites.Thanked by 1etaven

Honestly, I actually swear by Arabian crossed with some sort of riding pony! So totally with lilpebbles there :D
So my favourite breed that almost no one ever hears of unless it's Central/Eastern Europe is the hucul - a small, sturdy, multifunctional breed with amazing heads on their shoulders. We actually thought my horse was hucul x arabian cross, until I looked into the horses in his pedigree and it turned out his maternal line comes from a project to breed a historical Hungarian breed, the kunfakó, back into existence (basically, phenotypically, kinda like the quagga recreation?) from the Polish konik.
My horse's grandfather is actually an official konik stud, that I only know because I made a post when there was this trend of researching your horse's family tree, and I have a Polish friend who recognized the horse and tipped me off. Honestly, the konik and the hucul are not too far off from each other, just koniks are actually supposed to be dun - which is why my horse's dam did not get registered as she was a bay, but eg her dun foals are also officially registered as kunfakó.
I always take the time to spread the word about these breeds :D Hucul-arabian is a great cross, but also, I have seen drafts and quarter horses crossed with hucul too, all of these horses had very solid heads on their shoulders. -
@AquariusRanch - I definitely don't like coming off these days, but I can't help but love getting to feel tall for once with my guys, haha. They are 1/4 Belgian 3/4 QH crosses, but they definitely got the Belgian size.
@Kintara - Ooh, awesome! They are so lovely, though I don't envy the haircare, haha.
@lilpebbles - Honestly I respect it! And I also agree that learning on more challenging horses or riding/working with a lot of different ones is really valuable learning experience. (The lesson horses from my past I'm most thankful for are the tricky ones that taught me a lot!)
@ReneeScarted - Ooh, this is so interesting! I'm going to look more into these breeds, I love learning about ones I didn't know much about and it's so cool to see what came about in different regions.
