Moving away from the term "Appaloosa" - First round of changes out now.
  • When this game was created 20 years ago appaloosa was the most commonly used term to talk about horses with the LP gene. That's why "Appaloosa Project" whose goal was genetic research into LP, used it in their name. It's why PATN1 is still called Appaloosa Pattern-1 by UC Davis, and why so many scientific papers use the term.

As the world is becoming less US centric, the genetic discourse is moving away from using appaloosa as a color term and instead moving towards LP Spotted. It is time to start doing the same with the game.

I have two options for how to update the color naming system.

    1) Name Swap
"Appaloosa" in the name becomes "LP Spotted". "Bay Appaloosa" becomes "Bay LP Spotted". This is the cleanest, most straight forward way to do this and I think will cause the least amount of confusion.

Note I will not be using Leopard Spotted because "leopard" is it's own pattern name and that will cause confusion.

    2) Variant Names
We use names based on a horses LP and PATN1 status. Note this is likely to cause mislabels as the game can see the genetic code only but not what the actual image looks like. I think this will be more confusing in the long run for people but it is something that is possible to do.

LP/any -/- Bay Varnish or Bay Snowflake (non varnishing solid LP horses would also be called varnish)
    LP/- PATN1/- Bay Blanket
    LP/LP PATN1/- Bay Snowcap
    LP/- PATN1/PATN1 Bay Leopard
    LP/LP PATN1/PATN1 Bay Few Spot

Please let me know do you prefer option one or two.

    August 20th update
I have the variant color names working well enough that I am comfortable testing them in game. There is a huge range of things that impact the blanket size on LP horses and this system gets most names correct. There is about 5% or so that are still being mislabeled but they are not very far off. It's close enough for me to trial it.

Varnish rate has been cut down significantly at the moment. This is to help actually see the blanket markings to confirm correct naming. I do plan to do some more tweaking to how this works but in general expect less whiting out with varnish going forward.

To see the updated names you need to open the horse page and hit the refresh image button (if the image does not automatically refresh on it's own.) I am going to leave the name updates to be manual for the moment. In the future I will run a mass update but no point in doing that until we make sure this is the final form we want.

Skewed LP is now listed as Skewed LP Spotted. The markings are so unpredictable that there is no way to label them as anything else.

  • I would vote against using the word "spotted" again simply because it's already used for our kit genes and it would sounded redundant.

I.e. White Spotted Brown Appaloosa >
    White Spotted Brown LP Spotted

I understand your concern of the mislabels but I think the variant names idea is fun. It gives appaloosa breeders some variety and I like the ways those sound.
  • I don't really have a bone in the game as I don't breed patterned horses like these, but I think the 1st variation is the easiest, cleanest solution that I prefer. My eyes are already internally crying seeing the really complicated color names, and honestly, the point of the phenotype is to name it, if someone's interested beyond that exactly what genes are present, that's what the genetic testing tab is for.
  • All of my lines are based around Appys but Im totally on board for this change!

I really like the idea of option 2 but would be okay with either.

  • I also have a lot of appy horses in game currently. I’d like the option 2, with the variant names. I feel like that still explains the phenotypes clearly.
  • Thanks everyone for the feedback. I am going to make an attempt to implement the name variations with the STRONG warning that I may need to swap it to LP Spotted. It is possible using those names just won't work very well and will cause all sorts of confusion.

  • Some examples of what I am seeing with testing:
    image
    Silver Black Blanket

    image
    Buckskin Leopard

    image
    Brown Varnish -Mislableled

    image
White Spotted Chocolate Palomino Dun Blanket -Mislabeled

    image
    Bay Varnish

    image
    Liver Red Dun Blanket -Mislabeled

    image
    Black Varnish

    image
    Brown Varnish -Mislabeled

    image
    Bay Leopard -Mislabeled

    image
    Amber Champagne Fewspot -Mislabeled

    image
    Bay Snowcap -Mislabeled

    image
    Bay Splash Snowflake Varnish

This is not looking super promising. There is far more mislabeled names than I am comfortable with. The reason I did not do them originally is because of the weak correlation between PATN1 and blanket size in the game. I will give it another round tomorrow.

  • Maybe using the term LP complex/leopard complex instead of LP spotted could help? Then you would avoid the "white spotted LP spotted bay" redundancy and mislabeling.
  • The problem is no one in real life calls LP spotted horses that. They just call them spotted.

  • Here in the US we still use the term heavily. We have American Appaloosa Association (AApA) // Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC).
And then there's Appaloosa Horse Association (ApHcA) – Australia // Appaloosa Horse Club UK (ApHCUK) // European Appaloosa Registry (EAR).

  • Appaloosa is first and foremost a breed. I haven't looked at all of those but I would guess those are all associations for the breed. The breed is well known for carrying the LP gene (although not all Appaloosa do carry LP) and somewhere along the line we started calling all horses with the LP gene appaloosa and using the breed name as a color.

  • I have tweaked the cut off between the term varnish and blanket/snowcap so that it favors varnish a bit more. There is still going to be some mislabels because that ranges that small sometimes it comes down to just random seed. In general though less solids should be labeled as having a blanket now.
